study no. 00
The fashion industry is built on breadth — more collections, more drops, more products launched before the previous ones have been worn twice. We made the opposite decision: to make one garment, completely, without the dilution that comes from spreading attention across twenty. The white t-shirt is the most worn garment on earth and the one most brands take least seriously. This is an account of why we chose to take it seriously, and nothing else.
§ 1more is more, and the opposite decision
The fashion industry operates on a simple logic: more is more. More collections. More drops. More SKUs. More products launched before the previous ones have been worn twice. The assumption is that variety builds brands. That breadth means strength.
We looked at that logic and made the opposite decision. Not because we couldn't build more — because we decided that doing one thing completely, without distraction, without compromise, without the dilution that comes from spreading attention across twenty products, was the only way to do it right.
The white t-shirt is the most worn garment in the world. It sits at the centre of every wardrobe. It is the first thing you reach for and the last thing most brands take seriously. Every major fashion house makes white t-shirts as a footnote. A commodity. Something to fill a product page between the things they actually care about.
§ 2nowhere to hide
When you make one thing, you cannot hide behind variety. You cannot distract the customer with novelty. The product has to be right — because there is nothing else to fall back on. Every decision, every test, every iteration is in service of a single object. The cotton. The weight. The cut. The construction. The collar. The way it behaves after years of wear.
Most brands improve everything a little. We improve one thing completely.
There is a restaurant in every great city that serves one dish. You know which one we mean — the place with no menu, no décor, no theatre. Just a dish that has been made the same way, with the same obsession, for decades. You do not go there for variety. You go there because nothing else comes close.
That is what we are building. Not a brand that sells you white t-shirts among other things. A brand that exists for one reason: to make the finest white t-shirt we are capable of, and nothing else.
I started this because I couldn't find what I was looking for. I had tried every option that existed at the level I expected. Some were close. None were right. They went grey. They thinned out. The collar lost its shape.
I realised the problem was not that the right product didn't exist. The problem was that no one had made it their only job to get it right. The white t-shirt was never the obsession — it was always the afterthought.
So I made it the only thing. I spent a year sourcing the cotton, testing the construction, adjusting the weight, refining the fit. I said no to every other product, every adjacent idea that would have divided the attention. This one idea deserved everything.
One garment. Built around Supima — grown in California, certified, traceable, the standard most cotton never reaches. And held in reserve, for those who understand what it means, Sea Island: the rarest cotton in the world. One weight — 200 GSM, considered and deliberate. One fit — classic, neither slim nor oversized, the fit that disappears once you put it on.
We will not add a second idea until this one is everything it should be. And we will not stop refining it while there is still something left to refine.
