Cotton is the most widely used natural fibre on earth, yet its history, its botanical diversity, and the vast gulf between its ordinary and its exceptional forms remain almost entirely unexamined by those who wear it daily. This study traces the fibre from its earliest archaeological appearance some seven thousand years ago, through the botanical narrowing of more than fifty species to the four that are cultivated, to the single measurement — staple length — upon which all quality rests. It concludes with the two materials that sit at the apex of that hierarchy: Supima, representing under one percent of world production, and Sea Island, the rarest cotton in the world, at four ten-thousandths of one percent. The fibre, we argue, is not the blank canvas of a garment. The fibre is the work.
§ 1the grave at the beginning
There is a grave in the Indus Valley, roughly seven thousand years old. Inside it, archaeologists found a string of eight copper beads. And wrapped around those beads, preserved against all odds across seven millennia, were fibres of cotton.1
This is among the oldest physical traces of cotton in human hands ever recovered. It predates writing. It predates almost everything we think of as civilisation. Before people had agreed on how to record a language, someone had already decided that this particular plant was worth keeping close — close enough to place it in a grave, alongside copper, among the things that mattered.
We began here because everything we make begins here. Before the cut, before the stitch, before the collar and the hem and the weight of the fabric in the hand, there is the fibre. And the fibre has a history far older and far stranger than most people who wear it will ever know. This is what we found when we went looking.
§ 2a plant older than memory
Cotton has been cultivated for more than seven thousand years.2 That fact alone reframes how one might think about a t-shirt. The garment draped over the back of a chair this morning belongs to a lineage that stretches to the very beginning of settled human life.
The cotton in that ancient grave was not an isolated event. On the opposite side of the world, on the dry coasts of Peru and Ecuador, people were cultivating a different species of cotton at almost exactly the same time — independently, with no contact whatsoever.3 Two civilisations, separated by an ocean they did not know how to cross, both arrived at the same conclusion: this plant is worth the labour.
That is the first remarkable thing about cotton. It was domesticated not once but several times, by people who never spoke to one another. The cotton of the Old World and the cotton of the New World are genuinely different plants, descended from different wild ancestors. Humanity discovered cotton the way it discovered fire and the wheel — over and over, in places that never met, because the thing itself was simply too useful to ignore.
§ 3fifty species, four survivors
Here the story narrows, and quality begins to separate itself from quantity.
The botanical genus that contains all cotton is Gossypium. It is large — more than fifty distinct species, scattered across the arid and semi-arid regions of the tropics and subtropics.4 Shrubs in some places, small trees in others; wild plants most people would never recognise as the source of the softest fabric they own.
Fifty species. And yet, of those fifty, only four have ever been cultivated commercially.5 The rest remain wild. Four out of more than fifty — already, before a word is said about grade or rarity, nature itself has done most of the filtering. The overwhelming majority of cotton species are simply not suited to becoming cloth.

§ 4the cotton almost everyone wears
Of those four cultivated species, one dominates so completely that it is, for practical purposes, what the word "cotton" means to most of the world. It accounts for more than ninety percent of all cotton grown on earth.5 It is in the cheap t-shirt, the bath towel, the hotel sheet, the bandage, the banknote. It is, statistically, almost certainly what you are wearing right now.
And almost no one who wears it knows its name.
This is not a criticism — a fibre that clothes most of the planet has earned its place. But it is worth pausing on the strangeness of it: a single species, woven into more garments than any other material in human history, and the people wearing it have never thought to ask what it is. When something is that common, it stops being noticed. And when something stops being noticed, no one asks whether it could be better.
§ 5the difference is measured in millimetres
To understand what separates ordinary cotton from extraordinary cotton, one must look closer than the eye comfortably goes — at a single fibre.
The quality of cotton is determined, above all else, by one measurement: the length of the individual fibre, known in the trade as the staple length. It sounds almost too simple. But the entire hierarchy of cotton — from the cheapest to the rarest in the world — rests on this single dimension.
A standard cotton fibre measures around twenty-five millimetres. It is the cotton that makes up the vast majority of the world's supply, and it becomes a perfectly serviceable shirt. But there is a category above it, defined by a precise threshold: cotton with fibres measuring thirty-four millimetres or longer is classified as extra-long staple.6 The difference is, in absolute terms, the width of a fingernail. In the finished cloth, it is the difference between ordinary and exceptional.

Longer fibres spin into finer, smoother, stronger yarn with fewer loose ends — less pilling, more strength, a cleaner surface, and a softness that does not wash out but deepens with every wash. A longer fibre is simply a better fibre, and longer fibres are rare, because the plants that produce them are more demanding, slower, and harder to harvest. The whole pursuit of fine cotton, from the eighteenth century to today, is the pursuit of length. Everything else follows from it.
§ 6the scale of the world
To understand rarity, one must first understand scale. Every year the world harvests roughly one hundred and ten million bales of cotton.7 The number is almost impossible to picture: a bale is a tightly compressed block weighing several hundred pounds, and one hundred and ten million of them describe a quantity no single mind can hold.
Of that staggering total, only about two million bales are extra-long staple.7 Less than two percent of all the cotton grown on earth qualifies as fine. The cotton worth talking about is already a sliver of the whole — and within that sliver live the truly exceptional materials.
§ 7supima — the standard most never reach
The first of these exceptional materials is Supima. The name is a contraction of "Superior Pima" — Pima being the family of extra-long staple cotton named in honour of the Pima people, who cultivated it in the American Southwest in the early twentieth century. Supima is the trademarked name for the finest American-grown Pima, and the trademark is not decorative. It is a guarantee.
Supima represents less than one percent of all cotton grown in the world.8 It is cultivated exclusively in the United States — in the hot, dry, irrigated valleys of California, Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico — on a relatively small number of family farms, many of which have grown this cotton for generations.
What separates Supima from ordinary Pima is certification. The word "Pima" can be used loosely; cotton labelled Pima may be blended, diluted, or sourced from anywhere. Supima cannot. To carry the name, the cotton must be one hundred percent American-grown, must meet a strict standard for fibre length and strength, and must be traceable from farm to finished garment.8 It is the difference between a region and a guarantee — the same distinction that separates sparkling wine from Champagne. This is the cotton we built the standard around.
§ 8and then there is something rarer
Above Supima, above almost everything, sits a cotton so rare that most people who work in textiles will never hold it. It accounts for four ten-thousandths of one percent of the world's cotton supply.
It is called Sea Island cotton, and the numbers tell the story better than any adjective could. The world produces around one hundred and ten million bales of cotton a year. Of those, roughly one hundred and fifty bales are Sea Island.9
One hundred and fifty. Not thousand. Not million. One hundred and fifty bales, in a world that produces one hundred and ten million. If the entire global harvest were gathered into a single field, the Sea Island portion would be a patch you could almost step over. This is not rarity created by marketing. It is rarity created by botany, geography, history, and an almost unreasonable commitment to doing things the slow way.

§ 9a fibre with a six-thousand-year pedigree
Sea Island cotton belongs to Gossypium barbadense — the same botanical family that gives us Pima. Its origins trace to the coasts of Peru and Ecuador, where carbon dating has shown this cotton was cultivated more than six thousand years ago.10
The strain that became known as Sea Island took its name from the barrier islands off the coast of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, where, in the late eighteenth century, it found ideal conditions: sandy soil, heat, humidity, a long growing season. For more than a century — from roughly 1790 to the 1920s — this American Sea Island cotton dominated the high end of the textile world. It clothed aristocracy and royalty. It set the standard against which all other cotton was measured.
And then it nearly vanished. In the early twentieth century a small beetle, the boll weevil, swept through the cotton fields of the American South. Sea Island cotton, with its long growing season and delicate constitution, was especially vulnerable. By the 1920s the American industry had been almost entirely wiped out.10 A fibre that had reigned for over a hundred years was, within a single generation, effectively extinct in the place that made it famous. It survived only because a handful of growers on a few Caribbean islands — Barbados, Jamaica, Antigua — had preserved the seed. It is there that authentic Sea Island cotton is still grown today.
§ 10still done by hand
What makes Sea Island cotton remarkable is not only its scarcity, but the refusal to industrialise it.
It is still picked by hand. The long, delicate fibres that give the cotton its value are precisely the fibres that mechanical harvesting would tear and crush, so the harvest is done as it was two hundred years ago — boll by boll, by a small number of people who know what they are looking for.11 It is still certified by weight: every kilogram of genuine West Indian Sea Island cotton is inspected and authenticated by a dedicated certifying body that exists for the sole purpose of protecting the integrity of a fibre that would otherwise be impossible to verify. And it is still sent abroad to be spun — to a select few specialist mills in Italy and Switzerland with the machinery and institutional memory to handle a fibre this fine without damaging it.11
Hand-picked. Certified by weight. Spun by specialists. Every step is a deliberate refusal to do things faster, cheaper, or at scale — because doing them faster, cheaper, or at scale would destroy the very thing that makes the cotton worth having.
§ 11conclusion — the fibre is the work
We did not set out to write a history of cotton. We set out to make one white t-shirt, without compromise. But you cannot make something without compromise until you understand, completely, what you are working with. And the more we looked into cotton — its seven-thousand-year history, its fifty species and four survivors, its hierarchy measured in millimetres, its rarest expression grown on a few Caribbean islands and counted in mere bales — the clearer it became that the fibre is not a detail. The fibre is the entire decision.
Most makers treat cotton as a given. A blank. A neutral starting point from which the real work begins. We came to see it the opposite way. The cotton is not the blank canvas. The cotton is the work.
So we made a choice. We built the standard around Supima — long-staple, American-grown, certified, traceable, the cotton that more than ninety-nine percent of the world's cotton can only aspire to. And we hold, in reserve, the rarest cotton on earth, for those who understand exactly what one hundred and fifty bales a year means.
Seven thousand years ago, someone in the Indus Valley decided that this fibre was worth placing in a grave, among the things that mattered.
